How You Can Stay Healthy While on the Road

Updated: Apr 12, 2021

Joining me over the next several weeks, is my wife, Amy - sharing her best tips with you as you prepare to get on the road

It seems that every road trip someone "goes down" - whether it's little brother's tummy achesšŸ¤¢, the tension between your earsšŸ‘‚, or all the germ exposure from the planeāœˆļø - or worse when dad broke his armšŸ’Ŗ...

on. the. trip. ā˜¹ļø

Today I'm going to give you some confidence, and maybe a little mental peace, by sharing four ways to stay healthy on the road, and some handy tools you can use to help when someone is a little under the weather. āœ…

Your health is an investment - not an expense.

Sidenote: it will become an expense if you don't invest in it!

We've all been there before. You're on a trip and plans get derailed. šŸ’„ Instead of enjoying your time you're worried about your little one that isn't feeling right. Or maybe you're feeling a little... OFF yourself. These little inconveniences are keeping you from really unplugging and making memories.

It's time to take back your vacation. It's time to make sure these little gremlins don't step in and steal your trip OR your sanity.

Are you ready to regain control and really enjoy your next adventure??

I regret eating healthy today..... said no-one ever. Healthcare starts when there is something right with you.

Here are 4 things that will help you keep healthy on the road:

  1. Gratitude

The evidence is overwhelming. It's no longer just a conspiracy theory, or some woo-woo idea that you only hear about from people eating dirt or hugging a tree. We've talked many times before about how our brains are wired and that the first step in returning to joy is through expressing gratitude to God. It helps re-sync the right & left sides of our brain.

How many times have you experienced one of the big six emotions while prepping for a trip, or while you were on the road with your family?! YES? Right.

So, this is one of the most important ways we can stay healthy on the next travel adventure because your mental state is probably going to be the biggest factor in whether or not you enjoy the trip, right?

If you want to be old school, bring a journal and pen along with you to jot down 3 things you are grateful for each morning to start you on the best path - or - if you're like me, I prefer having everything in an app form - so make a folder with these apps: Bible, Soulspace, Think Up, 5 Min Gratitude Journal, and PrayerMate apps in it and start there in the mornings - it takes just a few minutes - that will be well worth setting the course of your day. You can even get your kids doing the same thing! Giving them space to write or draw 3 things they are thankful for each morning will help set them up for a successful day, mentally, too. With our kids, we help them walk through a devotional with their own YouVersion Bible App, and a JOY prayer card.

2. Exercise

Movement is a key to getting and staying healthy. Our bodies were not designed for the sedentary lifestyle we've handed them. Many of our body systems, including our endocrine system, our lymphatic system, our cardiovascular system, our skeletal system... Look. Your whole body loves to move.

Exercising not only helps with strengthening our muscles, raising metabolism, and lowering heart rate, it also releases chemicals in our body that stimulate feelings of peace and accomplishment. In other words, physical movement is key to your mental health.

In addition, moving your body will help you fight off infection and disease. So if you think of exercise as being only for athletes, think again. Exercise is for anyone that wants to be healthy. So, if you don't care about your health then please feel free to skip moving your body today.

So... get a hotel with a gym, get those bike trails looked up, hiking trails, National Parks, or even skating friendly areas, and add that time into your travel adventure plans - pencil it in as part of the trip so that it feels like it IS a part of the trip. If the worst happens with a rainy day or otherwise, and you're stuck in your RV or hotel room, play the kids Avenger workouts or other kids' workouts on YouTube. The kids will love it, and you will too!

3. Essential Oils

In order to be prepared for the unexpected, you've got to start with PREVENTION. Bringing your supplements is key to keeping the foundation of your wellness strong - keeping your energy up, brain clear, mood stable and immune system strong. Grab a travel case so it's super easy to not leave these at home.

On Guard is key to keeping all the germy things at bay and your immune system supported. On Guard beadlets in your pocket, On Guard Hand spray in your bag, On Guard hand wash, and your DIY Lysol alternative will cover all your bases. Also, your travel diffuser will go a long way in keeping peace, good moods, and happy sleep along the journey. Peace, Lavender, Cedarwood, Serenity, Breathe - are all great options for this.

What about when things go awry?

On Guard+ capsules will help you be back on your A-game in no time. If you have kids under 6, have this in a roller bottle form as well so you can apply it right away and frequently.

Tummy aches and digestion discomforts and travel woozies - keep your DigestZen, DigestTab, Peppermint beadlets, and your Ginger Drops along for the ride! Tension on the head and neck happens! So when it does, make sure you have your favorite solution with you - Peppermint, Past Tense roller, Deep Blue soothing blend roller, Frankincense to the rescue. What about when you've gone out for a hike and your muscles are feeling it? Have your Deep Blue rub and Copaiba ready, along with your spouse to sweet talk into applying it for you. When the bugs are coming around, you'll want to have your TerraShield ready, and your Lavender roller for the itching when you weren't ready.

4. Fuel

I was going to call this last one diet, then I thought better of it. The things you put in your body are the things that fuel your body. Imagine, if you will, that you got in an airplane bound for Aruba, and the pilot came over the intercom to say that they didn't have jet fuel, so instead, they were going to use some of the sodas from the airplane's galley. Would you still be in your seat as the plane started to taxi to the runway? Me either. Because we know intuitively that having the wrong fuel will keep the airplane from performing the way it was designed. You are like that plane, but unfortunately, you've been filling your own jet engine with soda, processed foods, refined sugar, and other junk.

Feeding yourself foods that actually provide bioavailable nutrients is going to change the way your body runs. Or whether it runs at all.

It is super easy to load up on junk traveling - trust me, I've been traveling full-time with my family for three years. However, it's essential for this foundation to be in place so that your immune system is strong for the "coming home" part of the trip - remember that part?!

Okay - so here are my best tips:

  1. Learn our "Good, Better, Best" Rating System - this will jumpstart you into making your decisions ahead of time what you will compromise on and what you won't

  2. PREP is Key! Meal planning, healthy snacks (even DIY Gummies or Dirt Balls), and even less-junky junk food will go a long way in this area

  3. What about eating out? Have a plan!

  4. Budget - Yep -this too!

For more in-depth in each of these areas, see our Eating Healthy on the Road post.
