Our company had a costume party with an ocean theme and they called, “The Deep Blue Sea”. For my costume I went to Walmart and bought a grey t-shirt, and some blue duct tape, then taped the letter “C” on the front of the shirt. It was a “deep blue C”. Amy gave me a hard time about the costume, but at the party I had someone come up to me and say they LOVED my costume, and that they had the same exact idea but didn’t end up doing it!
During our adventures traveling full time we’ve had people tell us they would love to do what we do, or that they’ve talked with their family about traveling full time and hope to do it “some day”.
In both of those situations, the clever costume and traveling full-time, the difference between the dream and the reality was the action.
During the time of the race to the moon, John F. Kennedy Jr. famously said something that has stuck with me since the day I read it. Listen to his words and think about how it might apply to the dream that’s stuck in your head.
“We choose to go to the Moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard; because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one we intend to win.”
Maybe there is something that has been bouncing around in your head that needs to make an appearance in reality. Maybe it’s something that is not easy, but is hard. Maybe it’s a goal that will serve to organize and measure the best of your energies and skills. Maybe it’s time for you to accept the challenge, to be unwilling to postpone it. It’s time for you to go from the “dream” phase into the “reality” phase. Maybe it’s time for you to win.
1 - make a deadline
2 - tell someone you trust that can hold you accountable
3 - make a plan for how to bring it to life
4 - don’t expect it to be perfect - good enough is good enough
5 - then take action
